Tau My Relatives
On the weekend of Sat. April 18 and Sunday April 19 I travelled to Virginia to participate in two events. Sunday April 19 was my birthday and I was fortunate enough that in Washington DC our own Gina RixTurey was exhibiting several of her wonderful paintings. You might be acquainted with Gina's work. She is responsible for the artwork that adorns the various pages of Grandmother Naniki's Caney Quinto Mundo website
Gina is an active member of the Yaboa Women's group, headed by our own sister Inaru. She participated in last year's visit to the National Museum of the American Indian's Taino collection, during which time we all had the opportunity to be and pray with some of our most sacred ancestral objects which are presently kept there.

Gina's Art opening was held at Sabor Cafe in Washington D.C. and during the event there was an awesome poetry recitation by two Boricua poets, both women. The event was listed in the washington Art online periodical for the date April 19 2009 http://washingtonart.com/beltway/ponews.html
I had a ball, and the way my wife Leni and I got there is a cool story in itself. I was lucky enough that I happened to run into Marie Taylor, the widow of our beloved Grandfather Cyril Tayor at the Saturday event. She had also made plans to attend the art opening on the following day. Marie was kind enough to drive my wife Leni and I from her home-town of Gainesville all the way to DC for Gina's event on Sunday afternoon.

At the sabor Cafe we got together with Gina and her wonderful husband, as well as a group of other art and poetry appreciators. The food at the cafe was incredible and of course I over-ate. The high quality of Gina's artwork is well known and her devotion to subjects of Taino interest is what drew me several hundred miles to be there. Leni and i enjoyed ourselves and we could not find a better way to spend my birthday.
Please check out photos of the event in my photo album.
