I know for a fact that there is also a strong ancestor reverence tradition in some African cultures in which some of the remains of a loved one are preserved for ceremonial communication. So it does not surprise me that the Santeria would adopt this Taino tradition which then allows it to survive to the present time very much the way it was observed 500 years ago. It is up to us now to research this living tradition and re-incorporate it back into our present-day customs.

is it possible that in Cuba(in Santeria),that the hanging of the gourds putside the home is a "hold-over"of this Taino function.In Santeria,it houses among many things,dirt from a cemetary,or from a specific persomes grave,and may include teeth,or other bones,in certain hanging gourds,along with a Spirit being,an equivalent to a Cemi...interesting.
