At the end of the ceremony we carried out the ritual of tying, via which we join together the three-point cemi of the dead or dormant Yokahu, who represents the soul of our male divinity in his role as a sacrificed hero to the stone hoop of Atabey. The woman who played the role of Atabey during this ceremony held the ovoid-shaped stone hoop that represents the uterus of Atabey in her hands. The man that played the role of Yokahu placed the three-point cemi on the surface of the hoop and I tied the two together. In this way we celebrated the fact that at this point in the yearly cycle the dormant soul of Yokahu reaches the womb of the cosmic mother after having died at Autumn Equinox, and having reached her womb he will gestate there until his eventual rebirth at Spring Equinox in March.

JORNADA INDIGENA TAINA, Jayuya, Puerto Ricotag:indigenouscaribbean.ning.com,2023-08-21:2030313:BlogPost:2411732023-08-21T04:04:25.000ZMiguel Sague Jrhttp://indigenouscaribbean.ning.com/profile/MiguelSobaokoKoromosague

On July 15 2023 the Buffao, New York organization called EL BATEY PUERTO RICAN CENTER celebrated its second annual Taino heritage gathering at that city's Prospect Park. EL BATEY'S principal organizer Beatriz Flores was kind enough to extend a very cordial invitation to our Caney Circle to participate in the celebration. I had the honor of travelling to Buffalo that Saturday to offer presentations of Taino culture and story-telling. Our contribution was very well received by the members of the Taino community of that region and we had a wonderful time.

Taino Summer Solstice Ceremony At Taino Woods 2023tag:indigenouscaribbean.ning.com,2023-06-27:2030313:BlogPost:2402372023-06-27T02:30:00.000ZMiguel Sague Jrhttp://indigenouscaribbean.ning.com/profile/MiguelSobaokoKoromosague

Takahi my relatives, as we approach the sacred point in the tropical year cycle when the rains ultimately intensify in the Caribbean. I would like to offer three presentations that explore various aspects of this weather phenomenon and its spiritual significance in Taino culture.

First I want to present the concepts surrounding Taino beliefs about rainy weather and dry weather. This duality plays a crucial role in the way we perceive our own sense of self and how we interact with society and the world around us:

The significant character in this duality now that we are experiencing the beginning of the Rainy Season is the spirit called Boinayel, the benevolent spirit of gentle rain.

Now I want to present an exploration of the significance of the Spring season in Taino culture. The Spring Season begins with the date of the Spring Equinox on March 21st when we Tainos recognize the gradual approach of the beginning of the yearly cycle. The following three months are perceived as the period of gradual reawakening during which time as the Spring rains slowly intensify, the earth comes back to life after the long dead period of the wintertime Dry Season. At the conclusion of this three-month period when the Rainy Season has finally come to full intensity we celebrate the second Spring ceremony at the end of the month of May, just before the onset of the Summer season. That ceremony is called Sirik:

Finally, we must face the more challenging aspect of the Rainy Season, the aspect that can manifest later in the Summer and Fall, in the form of more destructive torrential rains and hurricanes. The name of this spirit is Koatriskie, one of the two male companions of the female mistress of destructive natural phenomena, Guabancex. This entity, accompanied by her two companions presents to us the element of life that reminds us of our infinite vulnerability and the overwhelming power of nature:

This afternoon at 12:30 pm my friend Susan Goughler, a member of HARRISON HILLS PARK'S Council Of Friends stopped at my house and picked me up in her car. We headed north to the community of Gibsonia, PA. a Pittsburgh suburb with which I am well acquainted, it having briefly been the temporary home of my parents in the 1980's. We were scheduled for a visit at the studio of the internationally acclaimed artist Robert Griffing, the foremost illustrator of western Pennsylvania historical images for the period of the French and Indian War (1700's).

As explained in my previous post I recently collaborated with Susan on her project of updating the Harrison Hills Park environmental learning center, adding a beautiful new exhibit that features the historical legacy of Indigenous people in western Pennsylvania. The new exhibit includes several prints of Robert Griffing's paintings that illustrate historical events in the eighteenth century.

The eighteenth century was a pivotal period in the history of North America. The events of that century decided, first; the dominant language that ended up being spoken in what are now the nations of the US and Canada (English), and then later; the origin of the new nation called the United States of America.

Griffing has made it his life mission to create a spectacular pictorial chronicle of that era in his magnificent oil paintings. His award-winning art has been hailed internationally as nothing short of extraordinary! A huge percentage of his paintings feature dramatically accurate representations of the original inhabitants of our region.

Griffing has made it his business to become extremely well informed on the topic of western Pennsylvania history with a special interest in its original inhabitants. He frequents the closest federally recognized Native community, The Seneca Nation of Indians at the Allegany Indian Reservation (Salamanca) and Cattaragus as well as the Tonawanda reservation, in western New York state and has cultivated great friendships with many of the Senecas there and in our general area.

Susan and I arrived in Gibsonia and fairly quickly made our way to Robert's studio not far from Route 910, a road that connects Gibsonia with nearby Dorseyville where our Indian Center is located.

It was such an honor to meet this man. As a fellow artist and oil painter I see him as a wonderful model.

There is also evidence of historic Indigenous presence in the area. The most probable residents would have been Senecas, Lenapes and Shawnees.

The COUNCIL OF THREE RIVERS AMERICAN INDIAN CENTER (COTRAIC) was contacted by Susan Goughler who is a member of the FRIENDS OF HARRISON HILLS PARK Council of Friends.

Susan has been working on revisions of the park's Environmental Learning Center which until now has housed a number of exhibits of taxidermy prepared animals and birds, as well as specimens of plants and of animal bones. It has also housed a wide variety of nature and environmental displays.

Susan felt that there was a need to include a more comprehensive display that would represent the Indigenous legacy of our region. As the Indian Center's community outreach and speaker's bureau person it was my pleasure to help her with the research necessary to create a good display.

The display features an authentic Seneca lacrosse stick, a very accurate replica of an 18th century flintlock musket complete with bayonet like the ones traded to the Native people of this area by both the French and the English during he French and Indian War (1754–1763)

It also features woodland culture moccasins, porcupine quills such as the ones used by Norteastern woodlands Natives to decorate their buckskin clothing. She has also managed to acquire beautiful prints of some of the most iconic paintings of eighteenth century Pennsylvania Indigenous people by the world-renowned Gibsonia artist Robert Griffing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our sister Lisa honored us when she assumed the role of the mother Atabey and Lisa's son Ian assumed the role of Yokahu. She took in her hands the stone hoop with the ovoid shape of a maternal uterus that represents the womb of Atabey. This hoop still had the three-point cemi sculpture of Yokahu in his manifestation as a mortally dormant spirit attached to it. This represents the fact that the spirit of Life died during the Autumn Equinox ceremony in September, traveled to the maternal womb of Atabey at Winter Solstice where he became reincarnated and now he was reborn during this Spring ceremony. During that re-birth ceremony I assisted Ian in the act of separating the three-point cemi of Yokahu from the stone hoop and manifesting that re-birth.

Archaeologists excavating ancient Indigenous sites in the Caribbean region have long wondered what was the meaning and purpose of the enigmatic "stone collars" that have been discovered at several places in the region. These are highly polished sculpted stone objects shaped like oval hoops.

The use of digging sticks for the cultivation of the soil is a widespread custom among native peoples all over South America. There is evidence that many tribes who engaged in the agriculture of tuber roots such as the potato of the Andean Incas and the yuca of the Amazonian Arawaks utilized digging sticks with foot rests that allowed greater force to be applied to the tool via the use of the leg muscles.

We believe that the ancestors of the Taino used two kinds of digging sticks, one with a foot rest and the other without. Today only the digging stick without the foot rest survives in the peasant farmlands of Cuba and still goes by the ancient Taino name of “coa”. However, modern Andean farmers still use the foot rest type of digging stick in the highlands of Peru.

modern-day Andean farmers using the foot-rest digging-stick, sometimes referred to as a "foot-plow"

Primitive coas were easily crafted out of wood by the Tainos quite early in their history. A wooden coa of the “foot-rest” variety could be conceivably fashioned out of a long straight branch of a hardwood tree. A lower branch of this limb could be shaped into the foot rest and the portion that originaly attached to the main trunk of the tree could have been pointed and fire-hardened as the digging end.

The Taino inclination for decoration very probably prompted the carving of the area closest to the digging point where the thickened crook of the branch remained.

It is evident that the end of the “foot-rest” was decorated with the image of a snakes head. The Tainos associated farming with the fertility of the Mother Spirit Ata Bey and she appears to have been associated with this reptile.

The archelogical author Eugenio Fernadez Mendez (Fernandez-Mendez 1972) maintained that the Tainos associated the Taino Mother spirit (whom he identified as Ata Bey and Gua ban Ce) with the image of the snake. He also maintained that the so-called “stone collars” were actually representations of the maternal snake spirit, an allegorical “serpent” as a result of the similarity in shape and form. The coa also was such a sacred serpent which allowed to peek into the inner reaches of the Mother Spirit’s womb every time the Taino farmer pushed his or her foot down on the foot-rest and the coa was buried into the soil. The coa was used as a kind of messenger to the inner Earth Mother to plea to her on behalf of the farmer for good crops.

The Tainos, no doubt, found a way to ritualize the long snake-like shape of the coa further by taking ceremonial, non-utilitarian wooden coas and soaking them until it was possible to start bending them. This action allowed the Tainos to make the shape of the agricultural instrument more “snake-like” by turning it into an image of a coiled serpent. The end of the long pole was then tied to the foot-rest to create the characteristic ovoid shape that is familiar to anyone who has seen the famous Antillean “stone collars”.

As they often did, the Tainos adapted this wooden image to their other favorite art medium, stone. Obviously the stone pieces are the ones that most easily survived the ravages of time and Spanish Inquisitonal destruction.

The ritual oval-shaped coa-hoop not only represents the coiled sacred serpent but also the pear-shaped outline of a human uterus. It is the image of Ata Bey’s all-creative womb and the reflection of the circle created by the 28-day menstrual cycle. It is the imagery that comes to mind when one thinks of the moon “Karaya” and its allegorical link between the human woman and the Divine woman.

A number of scholars have suggested that the ancient Tainos used the stone hoops as a kind of ceremonial support for the equally famous three-pointed stone carvings known popularly as "three-point cemi". They conjecture that the three-pointers were actually tied to the stone hoops with twine or cords either inside or outside the hoop.

This photo depicts an actual ancient stone hoop that is part of the collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. As you can see, the curators at the museum maintain a three-point cemi tied to the hoop to represent what we now know of the ancient Taino tradition surrounding these two objects.

We in the Caney Circle have arrived at the conclusion that this assessment is correct. The ancient Taino did, in fact, tie three point cemi sculptures to the stone hoops. The reason they did this is because this tying ritual represents the ceremonial attachment of one entity with the other. Some of the three point cemies actually represent Yokahu, the Lord of the Life Force in a "dead" or "dormant" manifestation, his bare ribs and spinal vertebrae showing and his decapitated head resting between his arms.

We believe this graphic representation of the Life Spirit as a dead entity is purposely designed to indicate the fact that our ancestors understood this spiritual character to have a life cycle just like any other living thing especially food crop plants. Within that life cycle he is born each Spring, he rises to full maturity in the Summer, then wanes, grows aged and dies at harvest time in the Fall season when the mature crop plants are pulled out of the ground and killed. Yokahu is a spiritual entity that represents living things especially plants. His name is derived from the name of the most important crop plant of the ancient Tainos, the yuca plant, Yuca-hu, Yokahu.

We maintain that the tradition also included the belief that the soul of the dead Yokahu traveled down into the primordial underworld back to the womb of his mother Atabey during the Autumn season, where it would be re-attached to the mystical uterus of the Earth Mother on the first day of Winter in December and then gestate there for three months until it could be born again at Spring Equinox on March 21st.

The act of re-attachment that took place between the soul of the dead Yokahu and the divine uterus in December at Winter Solstice was ceremonially re-enacted by our ancestors by tying the three-point cemi sculpture that represented the dormant Life spirit's soul to the oval-shaped stone hoop that represented the womb of his mother. We in the Caney Circle now have re-ignited that tradition by actually tying a three point cemi sculpture that represents Yokahu's soul to an oval-shaped hoop that represents his mother's womb every Winter Solstice just as our ancestors did. This moment symbolizes the defeat of death and despair itself.

After allowing these two objects to remain tied to each other for three months we then feature them again in another ceremony on the day of Spring Equinox in March. On that day we untie the two sacred objects and separate them, symbolizing the re-birth of Yokahu when the divinity is separated from his mother's womb.

This is how we represent the victorious return of the Lord of Life back to the realm of the living. This is not just the victory of the spirit of Life and hope after he defeats death and despair on the day of Spring Equinox, it is also a victory for his mother, whose power of creation allows her to provide the gift of Life to the world from her own womb. It is a profound symbol of her generosity as she provides the world with yet another year of food sustenance.

Our brother Chris Castillo, who is currently training to be a behike of the Caney Circle joined us from his home in central Florida and brought his son Jace with him.

The ceremony followed the typical process of the CANEY CIRCLE Winter Solstice Ceremony starting with songs and prayers as well as the invocation of the four cardinal directions and the ritual smoking of tobacco.

Then we moved on to the separation of the men so that they can perform the Radiant Sun Dance. Chris' son Jace was chosen to represent Yokahu as the Solar Lord. The men stood in a circle around him holding on to the cords to represent the rays of the sun. Then when the men began to dance around him he became entangled in the cords to represent the bonds of challenge that can face any living thing. After being wrapped in those bonds, a woman chosen to represent the creative female energy inherent in all living things came and helped to free him representing the fact that we must all appeal to the female creative, imaginative aspect of our inner essence to achieve freedom from the entangling energies that we encounter throughout our lives.

After the anointing of faces, the man performing the role of Yokahu, the lord of Life and Hope, squares off with the man representing Guakar the Lord of challenges and trials of life.

Guakar dances holding the palm-frond effigy of his totem animal, the shark and a manaya hatchet representing challenge and transformation. Yokahu dances armed with a bow and arrow.

The dance is a battle between challenge and hope. Hope wins when Yokahu at last shoots an arrow into the body of the shark.

Even as he overcomes the challenges of life Yokahu also overcomes Death itself when we perform the ritual of re-conception. The woman that represents Atabey holds the coa hoop, whose ovoid. pear-shaped profile is a metaphor for a divine womb. The man that represents Yokahu holds a three-pointed cemi that depicts Yokahu in a dead (dormant) manifestation. They bring these two objects together and the behike ties them securely to each other, thereby returning Yokahu to the uterus of his mother Atabey, where he will gestate for three months only to be reborn at Spring Equinox in March.

Finally we brought the three-point cemi image that represents the soul of Yokahu who died at Fall Equinox in September back to the womb of his mother Atabey so that he can be reconceived again and be born in the Spring. We accomplish this by tying the three-point cemi to the uterus-shaped oval of the Coa Hoop.

Once Yokahu's soul had been connected to the womb of Atabey we knew that it would gestate there in the form of a divine fetus until March of next year at Spring Equinox. At that time he will again emerge triumphant from the divine womb and be born to start the sacred annual cycle of life all over again.

Takahi my relatives.

The issue has been raised to us in the CANEY INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL CIRCLE that why do we honor turkeys as sacred beings in our spiritual tradition, even considering this bird as the totem animal of one of the four directions, since turkeys are not native to the Caribbean islands. It is a valid question because we generally avoid mentioning mainland animals in our Caney Circle tradition such as eagles, bears and wolves, all of which are extremely meaninful to our North American Native relatives but are not evident in traditional Taino island culture. Our response to these commentaries is that, although turkeys, like wolves and bears, are not native to the Caribbean islands, there is evidence and reason to believe that the ancient Tainos knew of the existence of turkeys and understood the significance of this sacred bird in the spiritual realm.

The fact is that the ancient Taino were descended from mainland people and had brought with them to the Caribbean region the knowledge and appreciation of living creatures that were native to the mainland regions from which they came but did not exist in their new island homes. There have been several studies carried by a number of important researchers such as Dr Yvonne Narganes-Stordes of Boriken (Puerto Rico) that prove the existence of a veneration by ancient Arawakan Caribbean people of non-island animals such as jaguars. This research includes the discovery of jaguar teeth and the parts of other South American mainland animals that never have existed in our Caribbean islands. Jaguar-tooth pendants incised with Taino patterns prove that at some point in the development of Taino spirituality jaguars were important.

By the same token, more recent research has come to light demonstrating the presence of Taino pattern incised deer bones in Taino archeological settings, proving that our island ancestors were perfectly capable of acquiring the parts of animals that were not native to their Caribbean homeland through canoe travel trade with South American Natives and with the Mayas of Central Anerica. One example of this is the discovery of Mexican white-tailed deer jaw bones incised with Taino patterns.

The historic-era Taino maintained a lively trade and goods-exchange with the Classic-era Maya people and their descendants. The Mayas always domesticated turkeys. There are only two existing species of turkeys in the world. Both of them are native to mainland America. The most well-known species is the common Northern Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) that we all know about and is abundant here in North America and Mexico.

The other one is a much more extravagantly colored iridescent-feathered blue, green and orange creature that is native to the southern regions of Central America, in Guatemala and Yucatan, the Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris Ocellata).

Although the colorful ocellated turkeys grew wild all around them the ancient Maya never managed to domesticate them so the only parts of these birds that the Maya could ever get their hands on would have to be hunted in the wild. On the other hand the more drab colored common northern wild turkeys had been domesticated by northern Mexican Natives and the Mayas were able to acquire them through trade. So the Maya were able to keep domesticated common northern turkeys. They then could easily trade either live or butchered domesticated northern turkeys with the Taino. In any case I am convinced that the ancient Taino managed to get their hands on turkeys. There is a word for turkey that has survived in some islands of the Caribbean region. That word is "guanajo" (guah-nah-hoh). This word is ascribed to the Arhuaco tribal language of South America. The Arhuaco language is a member of the Chibchan language family, a language family that has been distantly associated with the Carib-related Choco language. Of course the Caribs are one of the prominent nations in the Caribbean and are the people from whom the region got its name. The Chibchan language family has also been associated with the Warao tribal language of Venezuela, which some sources suggest provided the Taino language with words such as "duho". It is also suggested that the Guanahatabey language of western Cuba may have Warao influence. I personally grew up with this word in Cuba. It was the word commonly used for "turkey" in the country where I was born.

The Boricua researcher Eugenio Fernandez Mendez used the term"guanajo" in reference to the turkey as an important totem bird within Taino spirituality in his 1972 book ART AND MYTHOLOGY OF THE TAINO INDIANS OF THE GREATER WEST INDIES. In page 75 of his book Fernandez Mendez suggests that the ancient Taino associated four sacred birds with the four distinct positions that the sun assumes in the sky throughout the four seasons of the year, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. These four birds were the turkey, the owl, the hummingbird and the red tailed hawk. Fernandez Mendez identifies the last of these four birds as an "eagle" but then he uses the Taino term "guaraguao" as its name. This confirms that the bird is not, in fact, an eagle since the word "guaraguao" is the Taino word for red tailed hawk.

page 75

He included a list of photos in the form of image plates that show Taino sculptures of four birds.

Plate XXV

In the list of photos he includes a carved stone three-point cemi sculpture discovered i Boriken (Puerto Rico) and credited to the research of the U.S.A. researcher Jesse Walter Fewkes, that obviously represents the head of a turkey complete with the fleshy protuberances above its head and beak that are distinctive of these birds.

As I mentioned earlier, Fernandez Mendez refers to the turkey using the term "guanajo".

We in the CANEY INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL CIRCLE accept the association of the four birds that Fernandez Mendez mentions in his book with the four positions in the sky that the sun assumes during the four seasons of the year. We also recognize a connection between these four seasonal sky positions and the four cardinal directions of North South East and West. The concept of the number four, four directions, four seasons, four sides of a rectangle, as an important general element of Taino culture is suggested by the researcher Sebastian Robiou Lamarche in in his book ENCUENTRO CON LA MITOLOGIA TAINA page 64 when he writes about the four legendary quadruplets, Deminan and his three brothers.

We, therefore associate these birds with the four directions of the Medicine Wheel as well as with the four seasons.

In our understanding of these concepts, informed as they are by the research of prominent researchers and by the spiritual counsel of our Taino ancestors, we know that our forbears did in fact recognize four sacred birds in their spiritual tradition, and that these birds did, in fact represent the four distinct positions of the sun in the sky throughout the year and also the four directions of the Medicine Wheel. One of those four birds was GUANAJO, the turkey.

And to see our Taino flag flying there along side the Indian Center flag and all the other flags and staffs.

As she does every year Leni volunteered both days in the kitchen making fry bread. That girl is a trooper!

On September 22 2022 Pittsburgh's BREATHE PROJECT hosted two events of the week-long CLEAN ENERGY JUSTICE CONVERGENCE. The events on that Thursday featured two important encounters with efforts by a Washington state-based Indigenous community environmental movement called the HOUSE OF TEARS CARVERS. This group of artisans create ancestors carvings in the tradition of the Pacific North West Coast Native American Lummi tribal culture of Washington State. These carvings are designed to focus attention on the crisis caused in the world by irresponsible fossil fuel extraction and management by the major energy companies.

The HOUSE OF TEARS CARVERS group arrived in Pittsburgh on Wednesday September 21 and were escorted by activists associated with the Breathe Project in a caravan that led the totem pole to Schenley Plaza in the neighborhood of Oakland.

On the following Thursday morning September 22 2022 members of the HOUSE OF TEARS CARVERS and accompanying supporters from various Native Nations made a presentation and offered a blessing that included the ancestors pole. It was my honor to attend that event in representation of the local Native community, the COUNCIL OF THREE RIVERS AMERICAN INDIAN CENTER and my own tribal national organization the UNITED CONFEDERATION OF TAINO PEOPLE.

That same evening the BREATHE PROJECT of Pittsburgh hosted a round table discussion at Phipps Conservatory and invited members of the Indigenous group who brought the pole to Pittsburgh to participate as speakers and share their experiences in the struggle against fossil fuel extractive business concerns.

The event at Phipps also included another blessing with the ancestors totem pole.

On the following day, Friday Sept 23 on their way out of the city the HOUSE OF TEARS CARVERS contingent drove up to the Singing Winds Site of our COUNCIL OF THREE RIVERS AMERICAN INDIAN CENTER in Dorseyville, Pennsylvania, just north of Pittsburgh.

The Indian center hosted the travelers with a brunch meal inside the main building.

After the meal, and just before leaving the Pittsburgh area, the elders of the contingent led a special prayer which included the spirit totem pole along with members of the traveling group and members of the Indian Center.

As I stood there at the end of that group of people in front of our main Indian Center building I realized just how linked we all are from coast to coast and around the world in this great prayer to save our world within the context of traditional Indigenous values.
