Se Caso Nuestro Guaribo Guatibiri / Our Guaribo Guatibiri got Married

Takaji (Saludos) mi familia taina y todos nuestros hermanos espirituales

Takaji (Greetings) my Taino family and all our spiritual brothers and sisters

On Saturday December 29, 2012, I experienced the singular honor of officiating the wedding of Josh Guatibiri, the son of our dear Taino spiritual sister, Tai Pelli. Tai is the representative of our UNITED CONFEDERATION OF TAINO PEOPLE in Orlando, Florida, USA. Guatibiri is an actor/stunt-man and professional dramatic artist in the employ of the company Universal Orlando at the park  "WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER" (ISLAND OF ADVENTURE), as is also his bride Heather.

We gathered, a group of family members and friends, in the beautiful, welcoming home of our spiritual brother Mike Lopez, here near the city of Miami, and under a gorgeous sky filled with sunshine and joy we were witnesses to the solemn union of Guatibiri and Heather.

I prepared the Caney Circle altar as is our true Taino tradition, taught to us by our ancient ancestors and observed by us for over 30 years

We began our ceremony with our purification ritual of pure water, sacred tabonuco (copal) smudging,  and prayer.

After the purification we participated in the rest of the ceremony to the rythm of the beautiful chants of our Caney Circle tradition.

We smoked the sacred tobacco in our clay Taino pipe.

Our spiritual sister Tai, mother of the groom, symbolically demonstrated her willingness to accept Heather as a new member of her family through the gesture of painting her face with Taino designs.

Eventually the bride and groom were both covered by the same blanket and their waists were fitted with a white ribbon which bound the one to the other.

In this position they offered each other to eat the tokens of their commitment, she a bit of corn food symbolizing he fruit of the women's harvest, he a bit of turkey, symbolizing the product of the men's hunt.

Afterward they both drank pure water served to them from the traditional Taino marriage vase, an object that we in the Caney Circle call the "unity vase".

It was for me a great pleasure to be given the honor of prnouncing this beautiful couple "husband and wife".

Here, after the ceremony was concluded, the members of Josh's family who were present wrap Heather in the warmth of their acceptance.

I would like to express my gratitude to the bride and groom for making of me such an mportan part of their wedding. Aso I send out a "jajom" to all of those who participated in this event, especially Mike and his kind wife, Maryellen.

Taino Ti

Miguel

I have to make a correction for all of my relatives who are reading this post. I inadvertantly posted Guatibiri's name as "Jeff". That is an error. His name is Josh. I am getting old and was working until 3:00 AM to post this message. I have corrected this serious misprint. Please receive my request for forgiveness Guatibiri.
