From a young age I was always intrigued with ancient cultures and my more “primitive” and distant ancestors. That tribal connection and the unique cultural perspectives called to me from the past, almost as if my DNA demanded it. At around 10 years old my interest in learning about ethnic traditions blossomed, which led me into finding “the zone” in karate, meditation, yoga, running and so on. As a teen I was entranced by the ancestral heritage ingrained in many of my ancestors cultures, and a few years later I found the drum.
The drum started me on my path of learning about a multitude of ancient instruments, then learning to repair and make those instruments, which then led into teaching. I started teaching about indigenous instruments when my oldest son was in pre-k and asked me to bring some in for show and tell, and what started as a few drums being brought to his school, ended up being large collections of instruments and detailed presentations in the later years as he aged.
Now I teach groups like scouts and at festivals and venues facilitating my instrument education presentations and instrument building workshops, braiding culture and traditional knowledge and myth into each presentation. My passion for learning and teaching about indigenous instruments constantly evolves and integrates new history, techniques and cultures

An important contribution to the event by our bibi (grandmother) Margui was the ceremony of the washing of the cemies (sacred spirit sculptures). Observing a tradition bequeathed to us by our ancestors via the sacred narration of Baibrama, in which the cemi was ritually washed with the liquid of the grated yucca root, two women were chosen to peel and then grate some yucca tubers in graters, and to then create a liquid from this grated yuca in which the cemies that presided over the event would be washed. I was given the honor of being one of the two spiritual guides to wash the cemies.

On another occasion we participated in a solemn ceremony to honor the ancestral grandmother who lived in the distant past of our Taino forebears, and who now lies buried in a grave in front of the Cemi museum. The remains of this grandmother, who lived in Boriken over 700 years ago were dug up by arqueologists out of her original resting place and eventually she ended up on display under a stairwell here at the Cemi museum to be looked at by tourists. Eventually the traditional Boriken Tainos succeeded in receiving the required official permission to re-bury the bones in a grave which now lies right in front of the museum. We marched in procession from the batey all the way to grave site formed a circle of people around it. At that place Bibi Elba Lugo and Bibi Shashira offered prayers. The sculptor who created the gravestone that now stands in front of the grave was given an opportunity to speak about his masterpiece of sculptural art and we all joined in the ceremony with love and devotion.

This newly designed font supports the writing system for the Taino syllabary that we created back in 1984.

As we Tainos continue our efforts at recovering our ancient Arawakan language I. wanted to offer an element of language which we in the CANEY INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL CIRCLE arrived at in the 1980's. The ancient Tainos did not have a written language system. There was an intricate complex of petroglyph symbols that expressed certain sacred concepts but it did not constitute a complete writing system. We in the Caney circle arrived at the conclusion that in this highly literate social environment in which we live now a complete writing system similar to the one employed by the ancient Mayas is necessary so we can communicate our language in text form. We can continue to use the Euro-centric alphabet that was imposed on us by the conquerors or we have the option of devising our own writing. in the decade of the 1980's we arrived at a relatively simple syllabary using images derived from Taino simbology, such as a picture of a male cemi to represent the consonant "B" used in the word "baba" (father), and a picture of a nagua to represent the consonant "N" which is at the beginning of the word "nagua". This syllabary is expressed as a collection of the 15 consonants used in the pronunciation of the Taino language and vowel attachment symbols representing the five vowels we now recognize in our current pronunciation. The system works by combining the various consonant glyphs with vowel symbols to generate consonant-vowel combinations such as the "B" consonant accompanied by the "O" symbol to generate the sound "Bo". The vowel sound is not represented by a separate letter but instead it is represented by the place on the consonant that the vowel symbol (or knob) is attached to. If it is "Ba" the "B" glyph is accompanied by a vowel "knob" attached on top. If it is "Bi" (pronounced "bee") the vowel knob is attached to the bottom of the "B" consonant glyph. If it is "Bo" the vowel knob is attached to the left of the "B" consonant glyph and so on. This is a system that is very similar to the writing system of the ancient Maya and may have been the one our own Taino ancestors would have chosen if they had been given the opportunity to continue evolving as a culture. Here is a sampling of the syllabary.

This new font that we recently designed for this old writing system can be installed on any Windows computer and used on practically any word processing program such as Microsoft Word. Please download the font file onto your computer. Then install the font. Once the font is installed in your computer you will be able to type words using this system straight from your computer keyboard.

After you install the font in your computer you may download this graphic image of the keyboard key stamps and reduce them to about 60% of their original size. Print out the sheet and cut the little rectangles so they can be pasted on the individual keys of your computer.

Each individual rectangle should be carefully cut out, one by one, and glued on the corresponding key of your computer next to the manufacturer's font character (at the right of the original character). That way you will be able to see the original character on the left of the keyboard key, and also next to it on the right, the new Taino-2 font character. Notice that each rectangle of the Taino-2 font contains two characters stacked one on top of the other. You must cut out each individual rectangle completely with both characters included. Each of these two-character rectangles must be pasted whole on the computer key. The upper character on the image represents what will be expressed when you type that key with the shift key pressed. The lower character represents what will be typed when the character key is pressed without the shift key.

Greetings My Relatives

It has been a while since our meeting of the Council of Nitainos and, as many of you are aware, there has been a lot of activity in the Caney Circle. Obviously one of the most active units of our community is the Caney Circle of Lancaster Pennsylvania which is unofficially associated with the Yukayeke Manicato there. Our sister Bibi Erlinda Toa Kao (Mother Crow), the Caney behike in Lancaster has maintained a wonderful schedule of ceremony in that city, blessing the local Taino community with the sacred power and wisdom of our Caney tradition every full moon.

Now the Yukayeke Manikato's kasike (chief), Guatu Iri, who is the brother of Bibi Mother Crow, has committed to earning his own behike necklace and also becoming a leader in our spiritual community.

It is inspiring to see the commitment and enthusiasm demonstrated by these relatives in Lancaster who are doing this all funding it out of their own pockets.

I was in communication this past week with our brother Jeff Johnson who administers the official CANEY CIRCLE website through his webhosting unit "Owlweb". He has committed to helping me look into the possibilities of fundraising to help defray the costs of maintaining our growing volume of activities. As a non-profit 501c3 church our circle has the capacity to raise much needed monies to support our important work but, not being very good at managing money, I have never been very successful in this field. We will be looking at more effective ways of handling the sales of our arts and crafts items, establishing a voluntary contributions page on our website and even looking for funding grants.

It is vital that we re-establish a checking account but the bank has told me that they require a document that is signed by everyone of you board members. As you can imagine that is going to be quite a job since you all live in different places. I am simply going to have to send the document one-by-one to each one of you for signatures and then present it to the bank. Please look forward to receiving this document in the mail in your home mailbox and please sign it and send it to the next person on the list.

I look forward to keep you informed of the progress of all these efforts.
