My Relatives
We are very excited about our Summer Solstice event being planned for June 20 in Youngstown. Ohio. At this point our Taino sister Rose Xochitl AnaO, a resident of Youngstown and the local spearhead of the project, has reserved the site and made contacts in the media community to try to get as much of the word out locally as she can.

We are planning a modest cultural presentation which will include demonstrations of yuca grating and preparation of casabe bread as our ancestors used to do it as well as a re-enactment of the hunting of jutia (Cuban groundhogs) with pretend jutias. There will also be an extensive display of Taino replica artefacts for public viewing. We intend to spark the Taino resurgence in the Ohio area and the local enthusiasm is begining to build.

If you have any relatives or friends in the eastern Ohio area, Youngstown, Cleveland and Loraine, or in the north-western Pennsylvania area of Erie county, please let them know about our event or foward them a copy of our event invitation so that they can join their Taino relatives at this the first annual Summer Solstice of the Forks of the Ohio River tri-state area.

Taino'ti Bo Miguel,
I spoke with Hector from the other radio station and he's offered to conduct a PSA next Saturday.(1st Saturday in June). I've passed out flyers, went to OCCHA and met w/ the exe director, left a poster and flyers. Felipe has taken upon himself to spread some flyers. I may have to make more! Graet! If you can come, fine. However, if you're pressed, I'll inderstand.

Its very exciting to hear everything that you are getting done over there in Youngstown. I will try to get there tomorrow but it may not be possible because I have some very pressing commitments here for that day. I am particularly interested in what you said that Hector at the other radio station is willing to do a Public Service announcement. They have a live internet broadcast of their Saturday show so plesae let them know that I will be listening in tomorrow on my computer and looking forward to the announcement. It is great that we are getting coverage on both Spanish language radio stations!

Please give Felipe a big hug for me for doing so much in behalf of this event even though he himself will not be able to be there.

SUMMER SOLSTICE 2009

Tau My Relatives
In spite of the forceful weather that prevented us from celebrating our Summer Solstice Ceremony outside at the public park in Youngstown, Ohio this past Saturday the Sague family and the Simmons family did get together and we did celebrate the sacred seasonal event at my house in the Pittsburgh suburban community of Verona. Because the ritual was a much more intimate and private one as compared to the more elaborate ceremony celebrated during a public Summer Solstice event we followed the scaled down version of the observance as laid out in the personal ritual pages of the Caney Indigenous Spiritual Circle http://caneycircle.owlweb.org/sunpath2.html
Please enjoy the images of the family celebration:
