Ask the Artist | Questions for Firelei Báez | Full Interview
Artist Firelei Báez responds to questions from visitors to her 2024 exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. What inspired her to start painting? Where does she source the maps she paints on? And who has had a profound influence on her practice? Dominican American artist Firelei Báez is one of the most exciting painters of her generation. She delves into the historical narratives of the Atlantic Basin and creates fictional worlds that explore the legacies of colonial rule across the Americas and the African diaspora, in the Caribbean and far beyond.
She draws on the disciplines of anthropology, geography, folklore, fantasy, science fiction and social history to unsettle categories of race, gender and nationality in her paintings, drawings and installations.
Thank you
Firelei is based in NYC. However, the DMAC has many on-going exhbits planned so when I return there later this year, I will find out more and lyk.
I am interested in this exhibit since I have friends in Des Moines. One of them is an artist herself. Please let me know if this artist lives there in that city. I think my friend would be interested in meeting her.
