Restroom Signage in the DR still reflects Taíno society's matrilineal tradition and heritage. Hips don't lie. Taíno women had extensive control over their lives and their fellow villagers.
Taíno women played an important role in intercultural interaction between Spaniards and the Taíno people. Women often assumed the roles of primary food producers and/or ritual specialists. Particularly when Taíno men were away fighting against intervention from other groups.
Women participated in all levels of the Taíno political hierarchy, occupying roles as high up as chiefdom (cazicas). Taíno women as such made important choices for the village and the relegation of tribe member taskings.

Often, via creation and collection of crafted goods, evidence suggests women were the both the wealthiest and trader or reciprocal gift-givers among tribes.
