Land acknowledgement of 2021 international environmental conference

On October 6, 2021, during the height of the global covid pandemic, a broad spectrum of environmental scholars from all over the world held a virtual gathering to celebrate the twenty-sixth International Interdisciplinary Conference on the Environment. This convention is held in a different country every year and on this particular occasion the geographic focus of the gathering was Mexico City. I was honored by one of the main organizers of the conference, Dr. Greg Cronin, of the University of Colorado, to orchestrate the land acknowledgement for the event. I chose a powerful Mexican Indigenous woman, an artist and leader in her own right, Xena Ruiz, to deliver this important declaration. to

I believe that a land acknowledgement is a profound statement of recognition, based on a critical foundation of history. If a land acknowledgement does not contain a basis of accurate history it can not be considered a legitimate land acknowledgement.
