On June 6 1981 I gathered with a number of people living in the Pittsburgh area who were interested in Taino spirituality and we founded a non-profit spiritual organization now known as the CANEY INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL CIRCLE. Over the next 40 years this spiritual community would flourish and blossom into an entity that now thrives in sites all over the world from Boriken (Puerto Rico) to Kiskeya (Dominican Republic) to communities in the states of Florida, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Oregon in the United States.

We are modestly proud of the work we have been carrying out these last 40 years and pray that Yaya Guaturey the Great Spirit blesses us with many more years of sharing this sacred tradition.

In August of 1987 we celebrated Harmonic Convergence on the grounds of the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center.

In April of 1990 we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Earth Day with a tree-planting ceremony on the grounds of the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center.

Those four trees are now full grown to a height of over twenty feet tall.

In 1991 we celebrated one of our monthly Full Moon ceremonies in the company of the newly founded Taino Native American Association based in New York City, one of the very first Taino communities of the Taino Resurgence Movement. It is now called Yukayeke Maisiti.

This is a photo of Behike Miguel leading a Full Moon ceremony inside the main building of the COUNCIL OF THREE RIVERS AMERICAN INDIAN CENTER next of a mural of Taino artifacts

In 1992 we joined other Tainos from the continental United States and from the Caribbean islands to celebrate our first ceremony on the grounds of the CAGUANA TAINO CEREMONIAL CENTER in Boriken (Puerto Rico)

The Caney Circle history crossed into the first decade of the new millennium with more collaboration with other Tainos on the island and in the diaspora.

We participated in events sponsored by the Taino communities of New York City

In the early 2000's the Caney Circle began close collaboration with the United Confederation of Taino People and its dynamic leader Roberto Mukaro Borrero. These photos were taken during a collaborative event between the UCTP and the Caney Circle in Philadelphia, PA

In 2007 we began to celebrate annual Winter Solstice ceremonies in Florida with behike Edgar Konuk Rodriguez.

We crossed into the second decade of the new century with continued vigor and strength demonstrated by this sacred  planting ceremony and presentation of the Caney Circle Atabey song carried out in Jayuya, Boriken (Puerto Rico)

My dear brother Jeff, your kind words are humbly received and appreciated. Your blessing is very much welcome. Many blessings of the cemies and the hupias to both you and David.

What a beautiful page of memories and moments from the past 40 years! Hahom brother for birthing this entity that has meant to much to me and so many others! 40 years of compassion and connection lived out and practiced in each sharing and each ceremony. May the blessings of Atabey, Yoka Hu, Yaya Guaturei, and the hupias  continue to flow through the work of the Caney Circle, her behikes, boitius, members, and all that join in ceremony. Seneko kakona!
