Taino Autumn Equinox with Yukayeke Guainia community and UCTP at Brook Park in the Bronx, NYC

Takaji My Relatives

I was honored this past Sunday September 22 to participate in the annual celebration of the Taino Indigenous Equinox Ceremony held by the Taino community YUKAYEKE GUAINIA at Broook Community Park in the South Bronx of New York City.

The celebration was led by the director of the UNITED CONFEDERATION OF TAINO PEOPLE, Kasike Roberto Mukaro Borrero, a Boriken (Puerto Rico)Taino who resides in Long Island.

The community began gathering at about 2:00 PM and by 4:00 PM we were ready to begin the CANEY INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL CIRCLE Equinox Circle Ceremony. I was honored by Kasike Mukaro to be allowed to lead the circle ceremony as he and several of the men of the community tended the guatu fire for the guanara (sweatlodge) ceremony that was scheduled to follow the circle ritual.

We were joined at the circle ceremony by Bibi Vanessa Inaru, the leader of the women's community BOHIO ATABEY. She added her own special sacred magic to our ritual.

We were also blessed with the presence of the bohike (spiritual guide)  Bibi Shihan Candy Warixi, who generously consented to perform the role of the Cosmic Matriarch ATA BEY, during the Caney Circle Equinox Circle Ceremony.

Several other members of the New York Taino community were in attendance, like Raul Kahayarix K. Rios.

and famed Taino artist Reyna Miranda

The ceremony started with our usual circle ritual in which chants were sung to the sound of mayohuakan drums and Taino maraka rattles.

Then the ceremony  culminated in the traditional Boa Constrictor serpent dance of the women as we honored the generosity of our Earth Mother ATA BEY by invoking the magic of her sacred totem animal "Maha" the boa constrictor snake. Our beautiful Taino women again (as they have done in ceremony after ceremony each year for 30 years) arrayed themselves along the rope that represents the snake, and danced this powerful dance of the Caney Indigenous Spiritual Circle bringing to vibrant life the essence of our reverence for our sacred Earth Mother.

At the culmination of the ceremony the celebrants were filled with  a sense of camaraderie and a beautiful bond within which we realized the ties of family between all of us.

The Circle Ceremony closed with sharing of prayer and meditations by the individual participants.

This then led up to the guanara sweatlodge purification which was led by Kasike Mukaro.

After the guanara ceremony the participants gathered in the growing darkness of what ultimately turned out to be a perfectly beautiful Fall day and ate the communal meal composed of the food that had been brought by the those who had come to share.

I want to express a sincere jajom (thanks) to my brother Kasike Roberto Mukaro Borrero and all of the beautiful members of Yukayeke Guainia who reside in New York and surrounding areas, and all of their friends who attended the ceremony, who showed me warmth and hospitality and who through their sweetness and good will demonstrated to me and all who were there the true nature of Taino love.

We are so very happy to hear that everyone had a wonderful time, Beike.  We definitely felt the love here in Borikén and we hope you felt our love, good thoughts and prayers as well.  Hahom, tiao, for sharing these wonderful pictures and for all your efforts on behalf of our Taíno family and community everywhere. It is so truly beautiful and wonderful when family comes together and we are blessed with a beautiful family and community!  It is a manifestation of love and spirit in action.  Seneko Kakona, Familia, now and always...
