The Threat of Alarmist Conspiracy Theories

We here in the Pittsburgh area are in mourning. Two fathers with young children and a young man with idealist ambitions, city police officers all, were systematically murdered one by one by well-aimed high-powered AK 47 rifle shots to the head early this past Saturday morning. This horrible crime was perpetrated by an umbalanced individual whose head was resonating with extreme alarmist rhetoric being spread in the alternate media by those who have no concern for the effects that this propaganda has on the minds of disturbed people.
It is a fact that the recent election of President Barak Obama has prompted a resurgence of the kind of alarmist right-wing rhetoric that was rampant during the Clinton years. Extreme Right rumor-mongers use the internet and the medium of talk-radio to spread false inflamatory disinformation regarding supposed plots perpetrated by the so-called "Liberal Left/One World Government Cabal" to take over the world and enslave Americans. There are certain recurring key themes in this alarmist rhetoric. Some of these key themes featured prominently in the verbage that was being spouted for months by the suspected Pittsburgh police officer murderer Richard Poplawski. These elements are:
1.) an extreme conviction that Jews are in control of the financial establishment of the country and perhaps the world and that they are using that financial control to influence politics in nefarious ways. The usual reference to this supposed jewish conspiracy is the word "zionist".
2.) that this plot includes all people of color (who are not caucasians).
3.) that part of this plot is to completely disarm the American citizenry by taking away all of their fire arams in order to assist in the thorough control of all Americans. (this alarmism is being aided by National Rifle Association Executive VicePresident Wayne Lapierre who maintains a persistent and strident anti-Obama campaign of fear-mongering wherever he can get a platform for his rhetoric

It was commented by a close friend of the shooter that Poplawski often mentioned his concern that the Obama administration was "Zionist" and that there was an impendin gun-ban that would deprive him of his fire arms. According to this source Poplawski often said that he was going to put up a fight if the "agents" of the "zionist" Obama government came to take his guns away. It is now obvious that he saw the two police officers that arrived at his home on Saturday morning as "agents" of the "zionist" "gun-snatching" Obama government.
The process that led to this tragedy was gradual. Living a mere blocks away from the home where my son was conceived, Richard Poplawski became intoxicated with this rhetoric over a long period of time, subscribing to far-right online sites such as the neo-nazi web portal "Stormfront". Poplawski had a history of extreme disrruptive behavior including expulsion from his highschool, expulsion from Marine boot camp, violence torward neighbors, a protection from abuse order filed by his ex girlfriend, and numerous violent confrontations with his own mother, in whose house he lived and whose 911 call for help prompted the arrival of officers Mayhle and Sciullo to his front door on what they thought was just another routine domestic disturbance call. Poplawski shot the two officers as they stood at the doorway speaking to his terrified mother.
There is an interesting comment that usually comes out of the mouths of those who promote the extreme alarmist conspiracy rhetoric that prompted Poplawski's actions this past Saturday morning. These people say that they themselves are not personally violent in nature. This statement presumably absolves them from the effect of their inflamatory words. I heard just such a statement from a person that I know just last night. The umbelievable fact is that in our own ranks there exists an element of this alarmist antisemitic mindset. The only thing missing in the non-caucasian version of this conspiracy trash is that these brothers and sisters see the conspiracy not aimed at Whites, but instead they see it aimed at people of color. Aside from that fine point the rest of the rhetoric is identical. According to this version of the conspiracy there is a "zionist" plot to control the world and form a One-World government and that plot includes the forcible disarming of Americans.
The irony of this whole tragedy however is that the victims of this nonsense are uniformly multiracial. There were dead officers of both colors black and white on the bloody streets of Stanton Heights this past weekend and there are young children of both colors, black and white grieving the loss of their daddies today at funeral parlors accross the city of Pittsburgh. That is the real harvest from this new crop of irresponsible pseudo-political alarmism, a crop that now comes in more than one color, that is proclaimed by people not just of one race, and even by some Tainos.

Etremely well said. I will post this on my My Space blog as well. You may want to see what I posted on The Falcon and the Dove blog on Sunday; it echoes some of your themes. I also mentioned that this kind of behavior would be heightened during the Venus Retrograde period march 5-April 17, 2009. Since the beginning of Venus retro, over 100 people have been slaughtered in mass shootings of three or more per incident. My full Venus retrograde post is on My Space or Falcon and Dove blog, too.

I knew Officer Kelly quite well over the years, and Officer Scuillo worked with Areya at Schenley over the years with The First Tee and the golf programs. He was a golfer at Central Catholic years ago.
My prayers are with the family, and with our global community, since I feel that this will only increase, along with other world challenges like the earthquake in L'Aquila between now and April 17, when Venus will roll into Pieces, heightening more deep, karmic feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing in those already unstable. We have to pray for those who are on the brink, and reach out to the. when we can.

Well I for one don't support Obama nor did I support McCain.
My condolences to the families of the individuals lost and may GOD rest their souls.
Anyway, there are other ways we can make a difference especially in lobbying against programs and ideologies which are harmful (especially a social and moral evil like abortion. I'm 100 % Pro Life. Every life is precious and deserves a chance to make a difference in the world.), but killing people in the way he did is not the answer. -

Jonathan , you know very well this problem has nothing to do with rational political belief or ideological persuation such as yours. This issue has to do with fanatical delusions of imaginary totalitarian plots that don't really exist.
I didn't like Bush anymore than you like Obama but that did not mean that i was going to be sucked into the various irrational far-out delusionary anti-Bush conspiracy theories that abounded during the Bush administration. In fact, in spite of how much I was against the Bush regime I was extremely skeptical about any wierd rumor that was spread about him even about real accusations against him. For example when I first heard about the Skull and Bones society that both he and his father joined in college I was very very suspiscious. The story sounded so bizarre that, as much as I wanted to believe that these men both belonged to some strange secret organization that wanted to take over the world, I didn't accept it. I did a great deal of personal, dispassionate research about both Bush and the Skull and Bones Society. Actually I never really accepted the whole Skull and Bones thing until finally Bush himself actually admitted it and I heard both he and his father proudly claim that they had joined the society when they were in college. Even after that confession I remain very skeptical about the whole plot to take over the world thing.
I feel that with all of the alarmist conspiracy trash that exists these days I am well justified in being that skeptical and hard to convince.
