Wow! It's been several years since I been here... In re-reading my info here I find how much has changed and really, not much has. Well, maybe I'm a bit older...
I'm glad to see that Miguel has continued maintaining the site. It's beautiful to see him surrounded with loving, generous people helping him along.
I'm honored he's kept my account active, even in my absence. Thank you Miguel.

Taino woman, early forties, highly opinionated (respectful but direct), passionate about all things Taino, very into personal and spiritual growth (as a matter of fact, I see no difference between these) hungry for learning and willing to share.
I volunteer as a co-admin of this network and enjoy the exchanges I share with my fellow members. These topics are not only interesting, but important to discuss, although we must keep in mind that the Taino Movement is out there- in real time- and not necessarily on-line...
I do a lot of writing and at times it can have a tone of authority... Truth be told, there are only 4 types of sentences and although I ask many, I don't write in questions. Just keep in mind, mine is not the last word. We are all growing and learning and we come from different places, both literally and figuratively. My opinions are based on personal study and experiences, introspection, all kinds of stories filtered through my perspective and opinions I hold at that moment. Everything is subject to change at a moments notice and without warning :)
My purpose is not to offend but to generate debate. One doesn't have to be wrong for another to be right. A good examination of a matter can generate some wonderful ideas and open doors we may never had seen were there to begin with. I'm willing to open the doors to my opinions and beliefs, to examine the questions they generate as well as the answers. I'm willing to see what I really believe in.
There are more questions than answers and I find it a challenge to tackle difficult topics. This can sometimes be frustrating, for myself and others, but it also helps us realize that there isn't always an easy answer and ultimately, we are all in the same boat.
Change is the only guarantee and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Taino change...
Respectfully, I remain at your service

I cannot say I agree with you, AF RA KAN GOD IN RESSURECTION.
You are perpetuating a hate I don't share. I cannot hate the colonizers for in doing so I will hate that which makes me who I am today- in all my Taino glory.
By encouraging hate we will never heal. The blame game has to stop. We now need to stand on our own two feet, realize the choices that lay before us and make the ones that will lead us to growth and actualization.

No sure what this person stands for. Present day eurpeans are not responsible for there ancestors, agreed. But not hating people that burned our ancestors alivie, killed babys and fed them to the dogs and everything we know about the first colonzier is just crazy. Regardless of how much admixture you think you have. But that behavior can and should not be glorified even if it means that if it didnt happend we would not exist.
I was familiar with de las casas work before. Like I said I think I had a bigger version. But just read it in bits. Lend it out, now its missing in action. But yeah, I am reading the short account. Even though its a small book that, I as a slow reader could finish in two or three days. I have been reading in bits. Very upsetting. Some stuff I knew but other are just crazy.
With that said I think you misunderstood me. I dont belive in that european must pay for what there ancestors did. Not all eurpeans are deccendants of people who had slaves. And the eurpeans that commited these wiked act are long gone. What I am saying we can glorify what happend to our ancestors. By saying yeah, if that didnt happend I wouldnt be here. Who knows maybe if it didnt happen you would be here regardless and maybe I would not be here. There is profersor (forgot his name) who talk about north america hidded heritage. When you see the clips all he is talking about is the spaniord colonazation of the american continent. He even say yeah they killed indian but regarless of that we should be proud. I actually send him an email. Telling he should be ashamed. I told him that those colonizer do not repesent me. If hispanic is attacheched to the conquistadores I want no part of it. I dont care how much of this admixture I may have or may not have. Remember I am talking about the eurpean of the colonzation periond that should not be glorified. I am not talking about present day europeans even though some act are still being commited. There are many euro-americans who I am sure contributed. I have a friend who is half irish and german. He is very knowlegable about native things. Once he get a chance he will become a member here. I aslo asked to see Jorge.
We should not be stuck on th past but there should be no glorifacation of the colonazation period.
Nanu, agreed with alot of the stuff you said. Might missunerstood you. But I did disagree with a few. But like you said we have alreay done this. Agreed to disagree. I guess we also adding to the agree to disagree list.

Not yet, I will restart. My sister wanted me to get into these postive thinking bood. One is napoeloin hill and the is by a mr wattles. Its all based on the law of attraction
I finished reading the wattles one. I am half way threw the other one. But I want to apply. Its a bit hard I am a beliver in postive thinking. I also have the movie the secret. Have you seen it?
Yes, the movie the hype things up a bit. But still good motivational. The books look good though. Mr hill book is a bit outdated with some info. It seems the book was writtin after the derpresion. Will who's we kinda going threw one now.
I know the discussion is very imature. But I think that if people want to learn about present day taino they need to come with respect. If i wanted to learn about ireland and would go to a ireland site I would ask respecitvly. So because of that I didnt see you had posted your comment on my page. Anyway talk to you soon.
There were more than one census taken in the 16th century. There were census for encomiendas and repartimientos; others were brought about by law suits and complaints, governmental re-checking and so on.
You don't need to know the name of something to be able to count it. Have you ever counted stars? I have and I only know maybe one or two constellations at best, doesn't mean I cannot count them.
Many natives ran away to the mountains. I believe these folk are the same you base your opinion with regards to the possibilities of pure blooded tainos today. Lynn Guitar said it beautifully : "How do you count people who are hiding from you?" If they were never counted, they should never have received a spanish name. The undeniable eventuality is that our people mixed, including to the point of castillianizing their names, changing their names to spanish to fit in.
Consider you own name- Altamonte- high mountain.
With regards to Wattles- he lived in the late 1800's, so it is almost assured you will find much christianization and old fashioned ideas in his writing. Bear that in mind as you read him, he was a man of his time.
You could probably borrow "What the Bleep do we know?" from Netflix, Blockbuster or even your local library!

Have a great day Juan and hope to hear from you soon.
Hey nanu, thanx for you comment. Intersting in your theory of my last name. I will look into it. I never thought of it like that. But like you said they might have givin themeslevs last names but that doest mean they mixed. We can not assume that every body is an amixture of everything that mirgrated to cibao or the other island. I dont know evry bodly family tree to assume that. So it does make me a bit mad when i see people assuming these things.
But in regards to lynn she is right. I mean even dna strand in cibao region confirms that we were unmixed untill recently. Whats not to say they are still full blooded in those regions. I know we both disagree with this one. But no one change my mind about this untill I have proof. So far dna is proving me right. I know enriquillo took over 4,000 taino people into the mountains but I agree with lyn. I am sure there people in hiding. Some who helped enriquillo and some who were not even slaves.
So far I have been able to trace my family back on both side 9 genraations. my parents come from the same village. No euro deccendant. Its easy for me cause many of my reletive lived to be over 100yo. My great grand father was 108 when he passed and his great grand father died at over 100 yo to and before thm. The more I research my history the more indian comes out. Like I posted before. Spanish names and middle names were not used. So far I have been able to to see where the last name were introduced. That will be hard to find. Cause I dont live in DR and they probably dont keep good records.
"What the Bleep do we know?"" Is this in anctuall movie?
Sure nanu. I was not stating that you jumped in. I was just excusing myself. Cause even though I am still a gentlman.
By the way I knew there were more censoring. I was just stating that this one. I wanted to give an actuall name of the conquistador that king fernand ordered.

Painting feathers, there is a processyou have to go through. First I steam them to make sure there are no holes or splits.. This is optional but is a way to try and repair splits. Then I spray the feathers with an acrylic spray sealant. Next I use gesso to create a canvas then I paint with acrylic "heavy body" The more detailed the subject the longer it takes, as you paint in layers. OK there you have it. I will be finishing up some humming birds and I am starting an owl soon.. Thanks Nanu,
Maria
Nanu, I just want to add your art and bead work are wonderful. I would love to be able to bead. I have had some the best try and teach me but I just can't catch on. Again thank you for your kind words and friendship.

Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros,in around the 1500s,told Spanish sailors to take census of all the people in there colonies, and the only way to keep count of people was by giving out spanish surnames to the indians and black slaves. so just cause you have a spanish last name does not mean your spanish descent the british did the same to black slaves
