On Saturday March 18 I had the honor of participating in the celebration of the 2023 Spring Equinox ceremony in New York City with the community of Taino Yukayeke Guainia and the Confederation of Taino People, led by my spiritual brother Kasike Roberto Mukaro Borrero.

The ceremony began with the benedicton of the sacred guatu, the fire.

The Equinox ceremony according to the traditions of the Caney Indigenous Spiritual Circle was carried out under a beautiful blue sunny sky and a relatively warm temperature.

After the tobacco ritual the women move away from the men to participate in the Sibukan Dance and the Boa Constrictor Serpent Dance, a ritual that renders tribute to Mother Earth through her avatar animal, the serpent.

The ceremony culminated with the separation of the three-point Yokahu cemi from the  oval stone hoop that represents the womb of Atabey. The spirit of Life is born. It is the beginning of the new year cycle.
