Good evening brothers, sisters and family alike— I’ve been a longtime reader of the indigenous Caribbean network. I’ve been on a journey reconnecting with my heritage, as it was never taught to me by my parents so I am learning as I go.
I have been inspired by the various videos and art from the Caney circle tradition… especially of the creation myths and cemis. I am enthralled by the story of Yokahu and Guakar— twin opposing forces that complement each other in different ways. Yokahu as persistence, creation, life, and Guakar as challenge and trial.
Here is one of many doodles I have in my digital sketchbook. I wanted to depict the two brotherly forces in an affectionate way, side by side. Almost like Guakar is cuddling up close to his brother.

Thank you,
—Alejandro
