Leonard,

My apologies for taking this long to answer. I have not visited the page in a while. To answer your question, yes, but with a qualification, I don't claim to use transpersonal psychology with individuals who are still in the stage of forming an ego identity. Transpersonal, refers to going beyond the ego. Very often, traumatic experiences go right to the core of the ego and destroy it. Individuals cannot transcend what they don't have. In order for people to do that they need to be fully aware of their egoic stages and if they don't have an ego that is practically impossible. Right?
The work I do at the clinic is closer to an ego building one. I help a person in becoming "somebody" so she/he can move to be a "nobody" or, someone who has transcend the ego to embrace his or her higher nature, which is one with non-attachment, in the Buddhist sense of the word.
My private practice, on the other hand, allows me to work with individuals who are closer to transcending the ego, the conversations are more fluid; we talk more about the higher self. What I said does not exclude having conversation with individuals in the ego formation stages about the sustenance of holding spiritual practices and finding meaning in them.
As you indicated, individuals with traumatic experiences are helped when they understand triggers, and when they find the strengths to counterbalance those triggers. Of course the fabric of psychological trauma is more complex than that; it has so many foldings, like the need to banish experiences from consciousness, the sense of powerlessness, terror, and disconnections, just to name a few. The focus in working with trauma is on counterbalancing disempowerment and disconnection from others; which can allow room for us to sprinkle some transpersonal interventions such as dream work to bring the unconscious into awareness. I often use writing and ritual designs as a way to reel the person back into connections. I can go on and on but, I will stop here for now. I like your questions!

Hola Marianela,
Yes, you've answered my question. Of course, for me, when I interview people on camera an answer usually leads to another question. While interviewing people about their experiences with mental illness I have become aware that what is being discussed among the people who have lived with the illnesses is that when they come together in organized groups what they are trying to understand is, especially with women, the trauma that triggered the illness in the first place. Getting at the emotional source of the illness seems to be one of the keys to recovery. Which of course makes sense. My understanding of transpersonal psychology has to do with the 'higher spiritual nature' of each person being called into play to help integrate, to heal a person's emotional wounds. I know I'm not stating this correctly, but is this to some degree what you're trying to accomplish?
Thanks,
Leonard

Hola Leonard,

Thanks for sharing details of your work. I will certainly visit your webpage to learn more.
To answer your question, I am currently working as the clinical/program supervisor for a model called MDFT, Multidimensional Family Therapy (New Haven, CT). The program targets adolescents who are dealing with substance abuse, truancy or any other behavioral issues. The program works with adolescents and their families. Aside from that, I run a private practice oriented towards transpersonal psychology.
I conducted research in the Dominican Republic around Taino spirituality. My research was an inquiry into the elements of Taíno spirituality that can sustain women’s self-perception and enhance their self-esteem. I worked with 11 Dominican women who came from a variety of backgrounds—writers, psychologists, anthropologists, musicians, educators, and so on. The age spectrum ranged from 26 through 68. My study examined how learning about the Divine Feminine impacted women's self-perception.
Let me know if this answers your question.

Hi Maximilian,
Thank you for the welcome. I'm sorting out how to communicate via the ICN, but it is coming quickly. Samples of my documentary work can easily be seen on my website @ http://dreamcatchersfilmsinc.com. Also, just in case anyone is in Western Pa during the weekend of Sept. 27th and 28th an organization that I work with, The Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center is putting on it's annual Pow Wow celebration that weekend. It's a great time and there's a great deal to see and experience. It takes place just North of Pittsburgh.
Thank you,
IG
