Hi everyone,

I don't know if any of you have read about this -- see this message from the NING directors: http://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/ning-update -- but it looks like if we don't pay NING, this network will be shut down, and everything created here, all of the information shared, will be lost for good.

As the person who set up the network early in 2008, as an alternative to something else that was then to be shut down, this is pretty depressing. I never would have wanted to entice so many people into one particular corner of the Web, only to see it commercialized and/or shut down...as happens so often on the Web.

Personally, I would recommend to everyone to start saving copies of anything and everything they find on this site, and to perhaps think of alternatives for this network.

Kammy & Arenahi. Thanks so much. I am not familiar with these sites and could use all the help I can get!
Nanu, I am off to yet another city (7 cities this summer) so I will be off line for a week. Will check with you when I return as to what you think about these many options!

May I offer dreamwidth.org as an option? It's more of a blogging platform, but it's very simple to use, it's friendly to some of the more ancient computers some of us are stuck with, and setting up a community on it is easy; it can be as controlled/restricted as the community wishes. it does require an invite code to get an account, but that's easy to take care of: i have some codes myself, there's a community there already that gives away codes, and the admin itself would be happy to make arrangements to get everyone an account and onboard, they said it's a matter of sending them an email to make the arrangements.

Ok I found a lot of alternatives
Webs.com --> more of a website builder
SocialGo and Spruz.com also seem the most like Ning in layout.
Wackwall too!

It does have strong potential.... I was playing around with it for a bit, trying to learn my way around. Have you?

Yeah, wackwall is a weird name, but the service looks pretty complete...

No problem... not your fault :)

Sorry about that...or at least, NING ought to be, since that link explained NING's own new policy of terminating free groups unless they pay up. They also offer support for helping to migrate your network elsewhere...but I don't know which ones they help with.
