Mis parientes este ultimo fin de semana se llevaron a cabo ceremonias dedicadas a la Luna LLena y tambien a los ancestros en varias de las unidades del CIRCULO ESPIRITUAL INDIGENA CANEY. Las dos antorchas que representan la doble luz de la luna en este momento de pleno fulgor fueron prendidas por mujeres representantes de AtaBey, la matriarca cosmica. Tambien se prendieron los guatus (fuegos sagrados) para la incineracion funeraria de los Coaybayes elaborados de hojas de maiz.

My relatives this past weekend the ceremonies dedicated to the Full Moon and also to the departed ancestors were celebrated at a number of the units of the CANEY INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL CIRCLE. The two torches that represent the doubly bright light of the full moon were lit by women representing AtaBey the cosmic matriarch. The guatus (sacred fires) were also lit for the ritual cremation of the corn husk coaybays.

LANCASTER

En la ciudad de Lancaster, estado de Pennsylvania, nuestra hermana boricua, behike del Circulo Caney, Erlinda Toa Cao (Madre Cuervo), en colaboracion con su hermano, Kasike Guatu Iri del Yukayeke Manicato, convinieron una reunion ceremonial en el centro cultural comunitario Manicato para celebrar la Luna Llena de Octubre y la ceremonia de los difuntos ancestros. Las replicas sagradas de CoayBay, elaboradas en hojas de maiz fueron llenas con los objetos simbolos de los difuntos parientes y amistades de los celebrantes. Despues fueron sometidas a la incineracion funeraria en reconocimiento de la tradicion de incineracion funeraria de nuestros antepasados tainos. Las cenisas que este proceso ritual rinde son divididas en dos montones. Uno se usa para llenar una peque~a higuera que se cuelga en la parte superior de la tableta de recuerdos el otro se introduce en una vasija de barro que se coloca en la parte de abajo de la tableta para representar los dos elementos constituyentes del alma humana, el ju y el goeiz

In the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania our Boricua sister the Caney Circle behike Erlinda Toa Cao (Mother Crow), in collaboration with her brother, Kasike Guatu Iri, of the Yukayeke Manicato, convened a gathering at the community cultural center of the Yukayeke Manicato to celebrate the October Full Moon Ceremony and the ceremony of the honored ancestors. The sacred corn husk Coay Bay replica was filled with tokens memorializing the departed loved ones of the participants. Then the Coaybay replica was ceremonially burned in recognition of our Taino ancestor's cremation tradition. In our ancestral tradition we inter one half of the ashes from this ritual in a gourd and hang it from the upper portion of the memory tablet, and the other half of the ashes in a clay bowl and place it at the bottom to invoke the energy of both elements of the human soul, the hu and the goeiz.

esta es una escultura de piedra creada por los antiguos tainos que representa a CoayBay. Se manifesta en forma de un concepto mistico que incluye las cuatro direcciones cardenales y tambien lo mas alto del zenit celestial y lo mas profundo del inframundo subterraneo. En este concepto se encierra el entendimiento de un sotio mitico que se encuentra de manera omnipresente, en todas partes al mismo tiempo, y en ningun lugar en particular.

This is an ancient stone sculptural representation of CoayBay as a mystical concept that encompasses the four directions and also the up and the down as the manifestation of everywhere all at once and no place in particular.

The Caney Circle ritual representation of CoayBay is crafted out of cornhusks.

los objetos y prendas peque~os que los participes de la ceremonia han traido para representar a sus queridos difuntos son reunidos y son ingresados en el interior de ese Coaybay de hojas de maiz. Entonces este objeto sagrado es incinerado ritualmente flotando en una plataforma de madera sobre el agua que representa el mar primordial donde los restos oseos de los antepasados son convertidos en peces espectrales.

The tokens of commemoration of the departed are placed inside it and then it is ritually burned, cremated as it floats on a wooden platform upon a small pool of water to represent the primordial ocean where the bones of the ancestors are converted into spectral fish.

PITTSBURGH

En la region de Pittsburgh al oeste del estado de Pennsylvania nosotros tambien nos reunimos aqui para celebrar la ceremonia de luna llena y el dia de los sagrados difuntos, los venerados ancestros. Nos reunimos en el sitio ceremonial llamado "Sacred Elemental Space", que se encuentra en el municipio de Verona, Pensylvania, cerca del centro de ense~anzas de Verona del Circulo Espiritual Indigena Caney. El Sacred Elemental Space es administrado por Sol Shanti y CherylAnn Hawk. Ellos dos participaron en nuestra ceremonia. Aqui tambien se incinero el CoayBay confeccionado con hojas de maiz y llenado con objetos que fueron traidos a la ceremonia por los que vinieron a celebrarla con nosotros. Estos objetos eran simbolos conmemorativos de los venerados difuntos familiares de esas personas. Las cenisas de ese fuego fueron recojidas y divididas en dos montoncitos. Una porcion de las cenisas fue colocada dentro de una higuera en la parte superior de nuestra tableta de memorial, y la otra porcion fue colocada dentro de una vasija de barro en la parte de abajo de la misma tableta. La vasija de barro es un bello conten de ceramica creado en los talleres de los famosos Hermanos Guillen de Republica Dominicana. Este conten fue dise~ado como alusion a la urna funeraria de madera en forma de tabaco que se descubrio en un yacimiento arqueologico taino de Cuba.

In the Pittsburgh region, at the western end of the state we also gathered to celebrate both the full moon and the day of the ancestors at the site called "Sacred Elemental Space", located in Verona, PA, not far from the Verona teaching lodge of the CANEY INDIGENOUS SPIRITUAL CIRCLE. The Sacred Elemental Space is administered by Sol Shanti and CherylAnn Hawk, both of whom participated in our ceremony. There also the corn husk CoayBay replica containing tokens memorializing the departed loved ones of the participants was cremated and the ashes were separated into the two portions and placed in the upper hanging gourd and the lower clay container of our memory tablet. Our clay container is a beautiful ceramic piece created by the Brothers Guillen ceramic studios of Dominican Republic, and it invokes the shape of the wooden funerary container in the shape of a cigar discovered in Cuba.

Nuestra hermana, la behike del Circulo Caney Karmen Guaraguao Negro Jaguar Chavez Mogdam, quien tiene acendencia Mechica y Apache, nos hizo el honor de contribuir un peque~o altar tipico de DIA DE LOS MUERTOS al estilo mexicano. Ella no pudo participar en la ceremonia por tener un fuerte resfriado pero yo puse su altar en un lugar de honor cerca del altar taino.

Our sister, the Caney Circle behike Karmen White Hawk Jaguar Chavez Mogdam who shares both Mexica and Apache ancestors, honored us by contributing a Mexican-style Day of the Dead altar to our event. She was not able to join us Sunday due to a bad cold but I brought her altar and placed it in a position of honor close to the Taino altar.

SOUTH DAKOTA

Este ultimo fin de semana nuestro hermano boricua, el behike bajo entrenamiento, Heriberto Guaragua'Niki Martinez no se encontraba en su area de residencia, Liberty, New York dado al hecho que el habia sido asignado a una mision oficial en la reservacion lakota del estado de South Dakota atravez de su empleo con FEMA en cooperacion con la tribu y el Buro de Asuntos Indigenas del gobierno norteamericano BIA. Pero a pesar de esto este dedicado behike celebro la luna llena de acuerdo a la tradicion espiritual taina del Circulo Caney desde su residencia temporaria y honro a los ancestros tainos alli. Este hermano a reportado que los ancianos de la tribu lakota lo han recibido a el con gran acogimiento y reconociendo su posicion como representante de la espiritualidad taina lo han invitado a compartir con ellos la espiritualida lakota.

This past weekend our brother, the behike-in-training Heriberto Guaragua'Niki Martinez was not at his regular place of residence, Libery, New York due to the fact that he has been temporarily given an official assignment on the Pine Ridge Lakota Indian reservation of South Dakota through his job at FEMA in cooperation with the the tribe and with Bureau of Indian Affairs of the United States. But in spite of that, this dedicated behike went ahead and celebrated the Full Moon right there at his temporary residence and honored the Taino ancestors according to the Taino tradition of the Caney Circle. This brother has reported that the local Lakota elders have received him with a great deal of warmth and acceptance, and acknowledging his position as representative of Taino spirituality they have invited him to their gatherings to share with him their own sacred Lakota spiritual tradition.

ORLANDO, FLORIDA

 
En la region central del estado de la Florida nuestro hermano, el behike bajo entrenamiento del Circulo Caney, Joey Karey Inherst se esmero en celebrar la ceremonia de Luna LLena segun la tradicion de nuestros antepasados tainos y las ense~anzas de nuestro Circulo Caney. Una bella joven represento a la matriarca cosmica AtaBey al prender las dos antorchas que representan la doble luz de la Luna cuando esta llena.

In the region of central Florida our brother, the behike-in-training Joey Karey Inherst did a wonderful job of celebrating the Full Moon Ceremony according to the tradition of our Taino ancestors and the teachings of our Caney Circle. A lovely young sister represented the cosmic matriarch, AtaBey when she lit the two torches that represent the double light of the moon when it is full.

LEHIGH ACRES, FLORIDA

En la region de la costa del Golfo De Mexico al sur del estado de la Florida, territorio ancestral de nuestros parientes tribales los Tequestas, nuestro hermano, el behike del Circulo Caney, Edgar Kunuk Rodriguez celebro la ceremonia de Luna Llena y el dia de los difuntos ancestros creando su propia version de la sagrada tableta de conmemoracion con su higuera colgando en la parte superior y la vasija de barro en la parte de abajo. Su se~ora, nuestra hermana Julie, hizo su contribucion a la ceremonia haciendo el papel simbolico de La matriarca cosmica AtaBey al prender las dos antorchas que representan la doble luz de la luna llena.

In the costal region of the Gulf of Mexico on the southern area of Florida, the ancestral territory of our tribal relatives the Tequestas, our brother, the Caney Circle behike Edgar Kunuk Rodriguez celebrated the Full Moon Ceremony and the Day of the Departed Ancestors, creating his own version of the sacred Memory Tablet with its gourd hanging from its upper area and the clay bowl at the bottom. His wife, our sister Julie, contributed to the ceremony performing the simbolic role of the Cosmic Matriarch, AtaBey, by lighting the two torches that represent the double light of the moon when it is full.

Para mi es causa de gran felicidad y gratitud poder ver a estos dedicados guias espirituales llevando a cabo su responsabilidad, desempe~ando su labor de amor en varias partes del continente. Seguimos adelante llevando la tradicion ancestral a todas las comunidades donde nuestros hermanos y hermanas esperan hambrientos por recibir la verdad cultural de nuestro pueblo taino.

For me it is a source of great joy and gratitude to be able to witness all of these dedicated spiritual guides carrying outtheir responsibility, doing thei labor of love in various parts of the continent. We continue to move forward bringing the ancestral tradition to all the communities where our brothers and sisters hungrily await to receive the cultural truth of our Taino people.
